Spirit Airlines cancels all flights as their pilots go out on strike citing low pay and poor working conditions as it relates to scheduling.

If you were scheduled to fly Spirit Airlines today --- stay home! The airline canceled all flights today as their pilots officially went on strike at 5AM. Talks broke down overnight as the pilots wanted better scheduling options...and of course more money. Spirit's offer of a 30% increase over the next five years was rejected. Stay tuned.
OurSlice: In this day and age of fare wars and low compensation for pilots --- the entire airline industry seems like a lose-lose. Bad for the company and bad for the workers. Unfortunately, what's coming next is bad for the consumer. Higher prices and less safety.

Plane crash kills 158 people in India...Air India pilot tried to land 'at a tricky hilltop'...8 survivors...

158 dead in plane crash

From The AP --- An Air India Express plane trying to land at a tricky hilltop airport in southern India overshot the runway, crashed over a cliff and burst into flames at dawn Saturday, killing nearly 160 people, officials said. There were eight survivors. Dense black smoke billowed from the wreckage of the flaming Boeing aircraft in a hilly area with thick grass and trees just outside Mangalore's Bajpe airport.

Firefighters sprayed water and foam on the plane — which was traveling from Dubai — as others struggled to find survivors. An Associated Press photo showed two rescuers running up a hill carrying a young girl covered in foam to waiting medics. The child's fate was not immediately known. The plane was carrying 160 passengers — all Indian — and six crew members, Air India official Anup Srivastava said. The British pilot and Indian co-pilot were among the dead.

Airlines collect a staggering $7.8 billion in fees in 2009...up 42 percent from 2008...Delta alone collected $1.65 billion...

Airlines collected $7.8 billion in revenue from ancillary fees last year, up 42 percent from 2008. Most came from checked baggage, which were first implemented in 2008 when oil prices were at $147 per barrel. Delta collected the most revenue from fees last year among U.S. airlines at $1.65 billion. American is in second place, followed by US Airways. American and U.S. Air were second and third respectively.

OurSlice: This is ridiculous. I can see when the oil prices were so high but now they are 1/2 of what they were in 2008. Why not cut the fees?

The Unfriendly Skies...another in-flight bomb threat forces Delta jet to divert and land in Maine...'air-marshals on the guy's chest'...

From ABC News --- A Delta flight from Paris to Atlanta was diverted to Bangor, Maine Tuesday after federal air marshals took into custody a suspect who was causing a disturbance, according to U.S. officials and a statement from the Transportation Security Administration. TSA officials said the suspect is now being interviewed by law enforcement agents.

One U.S. law enforcement official said that two air marshals were "sitting on the guy's chest" as the plane landed. A Delta spokesperson confirmed the plane had been diverted because of a "disruptive passenger" who was taken into custody by air marshals.

Planes back in the air in Europe...Airlines lose an estimated $1.7 billion...Could they have flown sooner? Blame game begins...

From Fox News --- Planes were flying into all of Europe's top airports — London's Heathrow, Paris' Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt. Still experts predicted it could take days — even more than a week — to clear a backlog of stranded passengers after about 102,000 flights were canceled around the world. It's estimated that airlines lost at least $1.7 billion in revenue during the volcanic ash crisis.

Eurocontrol, the air traffic control agency in Brussels, said 21,000 of the continent's 28,000 scheduled flights will go ahead on Wednesday, as airlines patched together operations with planes and flight crews scattered all over the globe. Air controllers lifted all restrictions on German airspace, but some restrictions remained over parts of Britain, Ireland and France. Giovanni Bisignani, the head of the International Air Transport Association, called the economic fallout from the six-day travel shutdown "devastating" and urged European governments to examine ways to compensate airlines for lost revenues, as the U.S. government did following the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.

Scientists fear that tremors could trigger more eruptions from Icelandic volcano...and air traffic could be impacted indefinitely...

Scientists fear tremors at the Eyjafjallajokull volcano could trigger an even more dangerous eruption at the nearby Katla volcano — creating a worst-case scenario for the airline industry and travelers around the globe. A new eruption would be 10 times stronger and shoot higher and larger plumes of ash into the air than its smaller neighbor, which has already brought European air travel to a standstill for five days.

OurSlice: Seriously, we have no control over this powerful planet we live on. When the earth is ready to blow --- it's ready.

European flights begin taking off despite warning that Iceland volcano is not done erupting and more ash could choke airspace...

An international pilots group warned that ash remains a danger and meteorologists say Iceland's still-erupting volcano isn't ready to rest yet, promising more choked airspace and flight delays to come. Still, cheers and whoops of joy rang out from Asia to New York to Paris on Tuesday as airplanes gradually took to the skies after 5 days of being grounded by the volcanic ash that has crippled European air travel.
OurSlice: As much as everyone wants to go home, they really shouldn't risk it until it's safer.
